Understanding Autism: Signs, Symptoms, Prevention & Impact in Uganda

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Symptoms generally appear in the first 2 years of life.

Common signs include social challenges, repetitive behaviors, communication difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and rigid thinking. Severity varies widely — some individuals need significant support while others are highly independent.

Teamwork Homecare supports families through comprehensive assessment and diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, family education, community awareness, and capacity building for local professionals.

Early signs parents may notice

  • Little eye contact or response to their name by around 12 months
  • Late or limited speech
  • Repeating the same movements or play
  • Strong reactions to sounds, textures or changes in routine

Getting an assessment

If you are concerned about your child's development, speak to a doctor early. Our doctors can see your child, and therapists at our sister centre, Teamwork Physiotherapy Centre International, provide occupational and speech therapy for children with autism.

Key points

  • Watch for early social and communication delays
  • Seek early assessment and diagnosis
  • Individualized therapy plans work best
  • Family support and education are essential
  • Community awareness reduces stigma
