The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage on either side of the spine. They play a crucial role in filtering waste products and excess fluid from the blood, which are then excreted in urine.

Before we explore more, Let me share with you some  knowledge about kidney disease, its signs and symptoms, preventive measures, and the invaluable support offered by Teamwork Homecare in managing this condition.

Categories of Kidney Diseases

There are various types of kidney disease, but the two main categories are:

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD): This is a gradual loss of kidney function over time. It can be caused by various factors, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain medications. CKD can progress to complete kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI): This is a sudden and rapid decline in kidney function. It can be caused by various factors, such as severe infection, dehydration, or blockage of the urinary tract. AKI can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.

CKD is typically categorized into five stages, based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) – a measure of kidney function.

  • Stage 1: Mildly decreased kidney function
  • Stage 2: Moderately decreased kidney function
  • Stage 3: Moderately to severely decreased kidney function
  • Stage 4: Severely decreased kidney function
  • Stage 5: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD), requiring dialysis or kidney transplant

It’s important to note that early stages of CKD often present with no symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Disease:

While symptoms may vary depending on the stage and cause, some common signs of kidney disease include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Fatigue and weakness

So how Can on Prevent  Getting Kidney Disease?

Preventing kidney disease involves adopting a healthy lifestyle and managing risk factors. Key preventive measures include;

Stay hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water helps kidneys flush out toxins.

Maintain a healthy diet: Limiting salt, sugar, and processed foods while consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports kidney health.

Control blood sugar levels: Particularly important for individuals with diabetes, as high blood sugar can damage the kidneys over time.

Manage blood pressure: Regular monitoring and management of blood pressure help prevent kidney damage.

Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption: Both tobacco and alcohol can impair kidney function.

Exercise regularly: Physical activity supports overall health and can help control blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Avoid overuse of medications: Certain medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can harm the kidneys if overused.
